Harmany Grazing Muzzle Testimonial

KEEPING OVERWEIGHT HORSES SANE …
“I love these muzzles and will be purchasing another for my third Icy before spring pastures arrive. I credit these muzzles with keeping my overweight Icelandics sane while gradually loosing excess pounds. Getting them back to pasture and off a dry lot was key and these muzzles made it possible. I had been told that they should never be on pasture again, and this was not going to happen with acres of green pastures surrounding our farm. Thank you so much for the great product and clever design that they readily accepted.”  - Barbara S.

Harmany Muzzle FAQs

How durable is the Harmany Muzzle?
The Harmany Muzzles have Kevlar fibers worked into the plastic, so they’re very durable! Your horse might wear through 2-3 traditional muzzles a season, but just one Harmany Muzzle should last 1-2 entire grazing seasons.

I have had to use a larger size muzzle in the past so my horse had enough room to breathe. Should I order the correct size or a larger one?
Order the correct size– the additional breathing room makes it much more comfortable even in hot weather. You may find that you can use a closer fit, which will help the muzzle stay in place better and make it harder for them to get through the cracks on the side. One of the many advantages is that the muzzle can be reshaped as many times as required to get the right fit. If you leave it quite open for maximum air flow and a horse takes advantage of that, you can bend it up a bit tighter to keep it in place.

Is the muzzle too hot to put on my horse after adjusting it?
The muzzle cools quickly and in the process of shaping it, we recommend putting it in cool water to set the shape. It will not be too hot to place on their head.

Can my horse remove the muzzle or cheat and go through the sides?
Unfortunately, once a horse has learned to remove a muzzle, he/she can get out of most muzzles. However, since the design is more open and airy, more horses will agree to keep it on. Though Houdini horses always seem to find workarounds, small holes at the top corners of the muzzle are provided so you can add additional attachments to help keep it in place.

What other uses are there for the muzzle?
  1. Slows cribbing (you can cut out all the slots to allow maximum grazing for horses that do not need grass restrictions)
  2. Prevents aggressive biting of other horses
  3. Use while ponying to prevent biting

Tips and Tricks
  • If you need to secure the front strap to keep it stationary on the noseband, use Vetrap® or similar material to hold it in place across the front of the halter.
  • Feed your horse a nice treat to watch the chewing action. There should be a bit of extra room at the back of the muzzle for full jaw action without rubbing as he chews.
  • If, after some use, you notice any rubbed places, reshape those areas.
  • If your horse has tender skin or needs extra protection, use strips of real sheepskin (it breathes and does not get too hot).

How to Customize Your Muzzle

If a rub spot appears, heat the area and bend it away from the skin. If a cup needs to be made for the chin, heat that area and bend it out away from the chin. If it rubs on the cheekbones, bend the sides away from the face. Note: The front has the writing, Harmany Muzzle.

Method 1: Hot water
  1. Heat the water to 160*F/71*C or slightly less
  2. Hold part to be adjusted in the water for
  3. DO NOT OVERHEAT, and check the flexibility frequently.

Method 2: Hair Dryer, 1800 watts
  1. Warm the hair dryer
  2. Gently heat both sides of the area you wish until the plastic is soft enough to bend (DO NOT OVERHEAT IT).

Once the plastic is soft:
  1. Shape the area as desired
  2. Place in cold water, and hold until the plastic hardens. Repeat as needed. No limit to number of times it can be molded.
  3. Cut out extra slots for grazing (usually 2). Use wire cutters or sharp knife.
